ChangeMakeHer: Bring on the Next Generation

2018 was a big year for ChangeMakeHer - so big that it has taken us months to get around to recapping everything that happened! Read on to find out what’s next for ChangeMakeHer!

In late 2017, management of ChangeMakeHer was passed down from its founders, Maja Wilbrink and Ivana Santic, to two Brisbane State High School students, Ally Fulton and Khushi Shelat (that’s us!).

Over the 2017/18 holidays, we were really busy - using every available second we had in between our overseas trips to Switzerland, Cambodia and America to plan ChangeMakeHer’s first event for 2018: the annual EmpowHer Conference.

In just four short months, the planning was complete. On March 9th 2018 (exactly one year ago today!), 75 girls from across Queensland entered the doors to River City Labs for a day of workshops, keynote speeches, networking and subway cookies.

Then, in July, we held our second event for the year, the Dynamite Hackathon, which saw teams of young people compete by developing innovative solutions to real world issues.

In addition to these initiatives, we took part in a range of community events, running workshops for the Gen[in] Challenge and the It Takes A Spark Conference, and even sponsoring a local FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team to help them promote the international STEM competition to high school girls. We also pitched ChangeMakeHer to a panel of judges as part of the Young Starters Competition, where we met young entrepreneurs from all around Queensland.

We couldn’t have done any of this without our team of dedicated student volunteers at Brisbane State High School, and our 2018 principal sponsors: The Australian Centre for Robotic Vision and The University of Queensland.

Looking forward, we’ve been actively getting to know our audience of girls all across Queensland, to ensure that 2019 will be ChangeMakeHer’s biggest year yet! This year, ChangeMakeHer will be taken over by another generation of Year 12 students, led by Jeanette Hodgson and Rie Kocho.

Jeanette and Rie have big plans for ChangeMakeHer this year, including the Ambassador Program. You can read more about it here:  https://drive.google.com/file/u/1/d/1DdKoRTOMbh2wU0jd3_R5cpPU9ujrdLKW/view?usp=sharing.
